Papeete, the city

History

It was not until 1818 that the city of Papeete was founded. It becomes capital of the Kingdom of Tahiti and the French protectorate of the same name in 1842. Papeete was bombed on September 22, 1914 by the Germans during the First World War and volunteers left for the metropolis.

Papeete has the status of commune of full exercise in 1890; until 1945, it is the only one existing in the French establishments of Oceania.

The agglomeration of Papeete experienced considerable growth from the 1960s, due to the construction of the international airport and especially the installation of the management bodies and many staff of the Pacific Experimental Center. This is also causing an influx of workers from other islands and the emergence of precarious settlements.
